Digital Magnetics Receives Third-Party Verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)
We are proud to announce another important milestone: our innovative printable magnetic materials have received third-party verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).
What is an EPD?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an objective, independently verified document that transparently reports the environmental performance of a product. It enables fair comparisons between products that fulfill the same function.
EPDs primarily serve as a decision-making tool for businesses and specifiers, while also providing valuable environmental insight for organizations and customers seeking responsible material solutions.
Framework and verification
An EPD is developed in accordance with internationally recognized standards to ensure consistency, reliability, and comparability of environmental data. The most relevant standards are part of the ISO 14000 series for environmental management:
ISO 14025:2006 – Defines the principles and requirements for Type III Environmental Product Declarations. It explains how EPDs must be developed, verified, and communicated within the broader framework of environmental labels and declarations.
ISO 14040:2006 – Describes the principles and framework for conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which forms the foundation of an EPD. It covers goal definition, scope, inventory analysis, impact assessment, and interpretation.
ISO 14044:2006 – Provides detailed requirements and guidelines for conducting an LCA according to ISO 14040, including methodological choices and reporting standards. This ensures the quality and consistency of the LCA underlying the EPD.
Together, these standards create a harmonized methodology for measuring and reporting environmental impact across the entire product lifecycle — from raw materials to end-of-life. This enables internationally recognized and comparable environmental data, supporting transparent and informed sustainability decisions.
Why is an EPD valuable?
An Environmental Product Declaration provides measurable benefits to multiple stakeholders:
Print Designers and Marketeers
EPDs support responsible material selection in print design for retail environments, exhibition systems, and architectural applications. They contribute to sustainability certifications such as LEED, BREEAM, DGNB, and other green building schemes.
Print Service Providers (PSP)
Print service providers can use EPD data to select magnetic print media that aligns with sustainability targets and customer expectations for transparent environmental performance. It supports ESG reporting for print houses.
Brand Owners and Retailers
Companies increasingly require verified environmental data for point-of-sale materials, signage, and visual communication systems. An EPD provides reliable documentation to support ESG reporting and sustainable procurement strategies.
Project Developers and Specifiers
Developers and procurement teams can objectively compare magnetic materials with alternative substrates and make informed decisions based on lifecycle data.
Governments and Policy Makers
EPDs serve as a standardized tool for procurement policies, sustainability benchmarks, and environmental performance requirements.
Sustainability Consultants and LCA Specialists
For professionals conducting lifecycle assessments and environmental impact studies, EPDs provide high-quality, verified data essential for accurate evaluation.
Measurably Lower Climate Impact
The third-party verified EPD results show that MagScience™ magnetic films achieve an average of 31% lower climate impact across their life cycle compared to traditional printable magnetic PVC films depending on grade.
This reduction is driven by:
-
Lower material use through lighter construction
-
Improved transport efficiency
-
Reduced overall resource intensity
-
Optimised performance in thinner formats
Choosing MagScience™ means choosing a magnetic solution that delivers both high performance and a verified reduction in environmental footprint — supporting sustainability goals throughout the print supply chain.
International EPD® database
The Digital Magnetics EPDs are available via the International EPD® System and accessible through relevant national databases and Eco Platform, providing an unparalleled level of insight into the environmental performance of our magnetic print materials.
